Mattering Press is an open access book publisher. For Mattering Press we made a modern, mobile-friendly website with an easy-to-use Content Management System that allows them to easily sell and publish books in multiple formats (online, as an e-book, or as a hardcover).

Mattering Press is a publisher of open access books in the social sciences. In the Budapest Open Access Initiative, “open access” is defined as follows:

By ‘open access’ (…) we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.

In order to make their (forthcoming) books available online, they needed to have a simple solution that allows them to publish books in all common formats without much hassle.

To achieve this, we designed and developed an e-book publishing system that takes care of most of the difficult or menial realities that come with book publishing. The only thing that is necessary to publish a book in a host of formats is to upload it as an ePub file to the website. The site then automatically makes it available as a collection of web pages (one for each chapter). It automatically generates an online index for the book to allow for easy access, and it creates a search interface so you can easily search the contents of the book.

Furthermore, the ePub file is converted into a PDF version and into a version that can be read on a Kindle e-reader. With the magic of on-demand printing, this PDF is then used as the source for whenever a reader wants to order a hardcover version of the book.

So, by just uploading one ePub file, the book is published online in an accessible web version, as a PDF, as a Kindle version, and is made available as a hardcover book.

  • Concrete5

Like in most of our sites, we used the “Concrete 5” Content Management System to allow the people in the research group to edit their website. It allows almost anyone, without training, to quickly make changes to the site: Once you login, you just click the part of the page you want to edit and you can start typing right away. This makes it very easy to keep the site up to date. Adding images, videos, forms, and interactive content is similarly easy.
